As we left Cuenca (east of Madrid) traveling north into the Basque Country, we crossed La Mancha. This is a vast area of broad plains interrupted by low lying but rugged mountains and ravines. As we traveled we could not help but think of the Man from La Mancha, Don Quixote, and his penchant for tilting at windmills. We decided that if Don Quixote were alive today he would not dare leave his house. When he peeked out his window, no matter which way he looked he would see that his short squat ene…

In his book, "Living Beyond War", Winslow Myers suggests that there is a powerful drive to sustain life every bit as strong as the power to destroy and that that drive is soon to reach the tipping point. He continues "there are now more than a million grassroots nongovernmental organizations around the globe that share the values of nonviolence, human rights, gender equality, economic justice, and sustainability- the largest mass movement in the history of the world." I just returned from a trip…

The one week conference in Barcelona is now over. It has been stimulating, discouraging, overwhelming and fascinating. We came here wishing to be a fly on the wall but left feeling more like a beetle on the hallway floor trying to grasp strands of information as the delegates ran by. The entire five days has been a battle between the developing countries trying to pin down the developed counties on their commitments to reduce emissions and the developed countries trying equally hard to appear to…

Greetings from Barcelona. This beautiful Mediterranean city is hosting the last meeting of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) prior to the COP15 (Conference of the Parties 15) meeting in Copenhagen in December. We are enjoying beautiful weather and VIP treatment. The conference is at the Fira Gran Via conference center which is enormous (you can walk a mile without leaving the building) and state of the art. Following the opening day meetings we attended a recepti…

The Fruits of Intervention
by Patrick J. Buchanan, well known conservative columnist and past presidential candidate.
If we had it to do over, would we send an army into Afghanistan to build a nation?
Would we invade Iraq?
While these two wars have cost 5,200 dead, a trillion dollars, and a divided America facing an endless war, what have we won?
Gen. Stanley McChrystal needs 40,000 to 80,000 more troops, or we risk "mission failure" in Afghanistan. At present casualty rates, O…

What was your first response when you heard the news? http://nobelpeaceprize.org/en_GB/home/announce-2009/
When the world learned that President Barack Obama had been selected to receive the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize many were surprised including Obama himself. We were immediately inundated with a variety of reactions, some downright hostile, and others suggesting that while Obama is a good person he has not yet done anything that would warrant his receiving the award. And yet, the esteemed…

We stood against Bush and warmongering cohorts. We marched on the streets, All over the world people marched on the streets against the NeoCon's stupid war. Finally, we elected a man who wasn't afraid to campaign for peace. regardless of his ethcnicity. As Obama says in his letter to all Americans, the Nobel Prize belongs to you as much as it does to me. It belongs to America the beautiful.

The Time Is Now!
The USA at last has a President who is committed to dealing with the Big N (nuclear weapons) now. Are you as inspired as we are by
the NYTimes front page article on 7/5/09 about Obama's long standing anti-nuclear position, his global outreach to leaders, and his efforts right here at home? If so, then we hope you'll like our letter that should have arrived in his inbox last week…

- An Article published in the "Main Line Suburban Life Newspaper", Ardmore, PA June 10, 2009
Change is a challenging business.
Recently, in major speeches at the Notre Dame graduation ceremony and in Cairo, President Obama tackled significant and seemingly irreconciliable conflicts. In each case, he turned to finding common ground and recommended focusing on the way we approach the problem and each other. In that re-framing, he is proposing significant and far reaching change.
How change happ…

I am deeply touched by Dave Fry's story in BW's latest e-newsletter. His experiences in the Beyond War Capstone course at PSU clearly show what education is all about. Dave used his own intellect and humanity to discover and adopt new attitudes that are probably life changing for him and for others he touches. What a wonderful story of learning and the effectiveness of Beyond War's principles and strategies. I am blessed to know Dave's story.

Commencement Address to the Class of 2009
University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009

When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a
simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate,
lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy…

The book "Living Beyond War," a comprehensive statement of how Beyond War can bring about a world beyond war, is available for pre-order on Amazon. As of April 3, Amazon is saying that it will take 4 to 7 weeks to obtain the book, but a number of people have ordered through Amazon and received the book much more quickly.
As soon as 8 to 10 people sign up, we will begin what I expect will be a profound and exciting dialogue--one of the major reasons i wrote the book was to be able to have just s…

I believe that world peace is possible. I believe that a constructive approach to transcend the divisions among people is by uniting all people in a common cause to better our world. I believe the Beyond War Guiding Principles are a perfect set of basic principles to accomplish that goal. If a majority of people would commit to these principles, we could be united in a common cause and could work further to eliminate disputes and exploitation.
I also embrace these three ideas as core values to…

In the book "An Open Heart", the Dalai Lama teaches us that: Compassion is the wish that others be free of suffering. In the first step toward a compassionate heart, we must develop our empathy or closeness to others. We must also recognize the gravity of their misery. The closer we are to a person, the more unbearable we find that person's suffering. This closeness is not a physical proximity, nor need it be an emotional one. It is a feeling of responsibility, of concern for a person.
I think…

Hello Friends of Reverence for ALL Life,
We are saddened to learn that Rhena Schweitzer Miller has died at the age of 90. Rhena was a guiding light for John and Ty as she enabled us to author Reverence for ALL Life, our book which focuses on the life of Dr. Albert Schweitzer and his message of "reverence for life". Rhena read and approved the material we wrote about her father and offered helpful suggestions. She also wrote a much appreciated blurb for the back cover as well as granting permiss…

What I find in Beyond War that I have not found anywhere else in so complete and clear a form is the opportunity to participate with others in the challenge of self-evolution—in moving ourselves to a place where war is wholly unacceptable able on any level from the personal to the global. One key, perhaps THE key, is the principle “We Are One on This Planet.” This principle is obviously true on the objective level, such as the fact that we all breathe the same air.
But it is also true on a much…

Obama and the Return of the Real

nothing, and dash present grandeur down.

might not have been served at a local restaurant," is both…
