BW President Invites Suggestions

As President of the Board of Directors of Beyond War, I want to invite any and all to make suggestions on any aspect of the organization. We want to be an organization in which all members have a say in how things are run. We will be working to make this continually more transparent as we develop. So far, our primary means of communication and involvement is through teams. We have team coordinators' phone calls on a quarterly basis, and an annual meeting to which all members are invited once a year. We hope to be helping all of us to create the kinds of communications and connections that will help us work together in a very collaborative and inclusive way.

Please let me know your questions and ideas, or post them in our Forum for everyone to discuss.

Winding down at COP 15

Today, Friday, we spent at our host family home, watching as much of the remaining events as possible from the live webcast and on local television. We were happy to see President Obama speak, along with the other world leaders, but disappointed that they are not able to announce a major agreement of any kind. We understand they are still working on a political statement or agreement, which speculators are saying may happen even on Saturday. We have also heard that Obama was asked to stay overni… Continue

Copenhagen deal will require more than a little give and take

Here is an article written by a Scottish member of our Mediators Beyond Borders team in Copenhagen, JOHN STURROCK LAST week, I found myself in the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, the location for the negotiations on climate change. It is a vast cavern, with scores of rooms serving as the location for talks, presentations, media activity and lobbying. I was struck by the sheer mass of people, with laptops, leaflets, cameras and TV screens, milling around in the hope of influencing discussions. That… Continue

High Level Sessions at COP 15

From Bill and Elaine at Copenhagen: It happened that a fire broke out backstage at a theater. The clown came out to inform the public. They thought it was just a jest and applauded. He repeated the warning, they shouted even louder. So I think the world will come to an end amid general applause from all the wits, who believe that it is a joke. Soren Kierkegaard On Tuesday evening, the high level talks were initiated with this thought from the past shared by a Danish actor. We then heard… Continue

Inside COP 15 – the People Perspective as Week Two Begins

People, people everywhere! COP 15 is being called the largest conference ever held in the world and the largest negotiation ever undertaken. The numbers of people registering to attend the COP 15 increased steadily during the first week. We now understand that over 40,000 people are registered, and the Bella Center has a capacity of 15,000. As you probably saw on the news, another 50,000 to 100,000 people marched to the Center on Saturday to continue the pressure from “civil society” on the gove… Continue

Ken Cloke's Copenhagen Diary - Tuesday Dec. 8, 2009

Today has been very interesting, with several significant breakthroughs. We began with a meeting of the MBB team at 9, where we discussed what happened the day before, and reiterated the fact that we are in Copenhagen not representing only MBB, but mediation as a process, and mediators everywhere. We see this is a long-term process of education and support for climate change collaboration. We also spent some time talking about strategy. Our idea is to focus attention on the delegates, and there… Continue
