What can we do? Simple suggestions for change

Last Tuesday night after Obama’s victory speech I could not stop thinking about how I need to ask not what my country can do for me, but what I can do for my country. I am currently going through the study series and have felt increasingly discontent. I keep feeling myself thinking, ok, now what can I do? The messages of BW are so exciting and transformative that I want to give it to others. But I keep getting caught up in the question of how can I be an active member of the Beyond War movement… Continue

Beyond War and Gandhi: What it means to be workers for peace

As believers in the efficacy of peace, what is our purpose as those who have taken the extra step to become members of Beyond War? Recently, Phil Hanna and I went to a high school here in Eugene to show the introductory video and discuss with the students the things they found interesting and provocative from it. There were several issues the students brought up that have since not left my mind. One fairly obvious question that the students asked was concerning what it is exactly that Beyond War… Continue

Library Project: The Story of My Experiments with Truth by M. K. Gandhi

Hello everyone. My name is Melissa and I have recently started volunteering with Beyond War by helping Mora in the Eugene office and by helping Anne Millhollen with the library project. For Anne, I will be gathering data for the annotated bibliography as well as reading books to try and find the 12-15 core books. I am hoping that by making a blog of the readings I am doing for Anne, I can elicit discussion of these books whether or not those who find them interesting have read them. Beyond War m… Continue

What a great assortment of photos. You could put them on the comment wall of the library display project page since one can add images to comments. Leonora may have other suggestions.

Melissa,
Nice job adding the Eugene Library display and student art work to the Library project and your own photos. And there's the study group from the fall!

Melissa, I put a copy of "Reverence for ALL Life" in the mail to you today. It is coming by way of "media mail" so may take several extra days to get there. We had a great time visiting our family and new granddaughter in Ireland. I am using her picture as my calling card. She is much better looking than me and is a symbol of why we must move quickly to a World Beyond War.

Hi Melissa, thanks for the message. As soon as we return from visiting our new granddaughter, Abby, in Ireland, I will mail you a copy of our book. No donation is necessary. I will need your mailing address. We plan to return home on December 6th. We have distributed around 6,000 copies of our book and have 500 more in our basement that would like to find homes.

I'd like to email you directly, but this should be OK. Thanks for your call to me re: your fundraising calls. What I'd like you to say at the end of your conversation with them, is something like, "BTW, BW had just hired a Director of Education, Leonora Perron, and she will be phoning you very soon to request an interview with you. Her call has nothing to do with fundraising, she is interested in hearing about your experience with BW." OK? Thank you. Enjoyed meeting you the other day and our conversation about childhood, etc.

Thanks for asking, Melissa. I just got off the phone with the doctor and the last blood work showed good improvement so we are keeping her on fluid therapy for another 24 hours to see where it takes us. It is certainly better news that we had previously. Thanks again for doing the presentation with me today. You are a natural and I hope you feel confident enough to do more of them. This was a real acid test and you were great.

Melissa, Thanks for the kind words. Nothing about the meetings we have with the local counterprotesters has been in any paper. We are doing it quietly. I think any media attention to it at this point would hamper the effort. Things are a bit on hold right now as my partners in this venture have been so busy working on Obama's campaign they have little time for other efforts. As we proceed, we might be able to blog.
