A "building a world beyond war" display in every public library

With your help, we plan to offer a Beyond War display and materials to every public library. Our DVD and Winslow's book are part of this. In addition, we would have about 15 core books and films that we have selected as materials every library should own to help build a world beyond war. We are actively looking for grants to fund the project.

Scheduling Displays:
We have 4 display kits available for pilot testing - 2 banners & 2 poster sets.
The banners are 3' x 4' and require either wall space or the front of a table to display. The posters are 15" x 20" and are mounted so that they can rest on stands on the top of a table, display case, or tall shelf. Both kits also include a copy of our Core List brochures and bookmarks, for the librarians to photocopy, and either printed/mounted copies of book and DVD covers from our Core List or actual books and DVD covers to place within the display. Use our Library Project Display - Schedule wiki document to reserve a kit for your library. Check for kit availability first, book the month with your library, and update the schedule. If you need help using the wiki, just send a message to Anne Millhollen or Mora Rogers.

Background:
Beyond War members suggested books, films, songs and websites. Current (3/09) annotated lists of the suggested items are attached. The students in the Portland State University Beyond War Capstone class reviewed many of these materials as to whether they are appropriate for a public library audience. Their reviews will be posted on the Forum. We chose the Core List for the display from the materials that received good reviews.

Here is where your help is needed.

1. Our bibliographies and Core List will be updated frequently. If you have any insight into items that should or should not be added to the bibliographies or made part of the core group, tell us.

2. We are just beginning a bibliography of fiction books, feature films and music.

3. We are writing discussion questions for the Core List books and films. In time, we will create a brochure for book clubs and film clubs. We would encourage other Beyond War book and film clubs to join us in this project.

4. We are also beginning to create a bibliography and core collection for youth in all age groups.

This is all very exciting and fun. It is a long-term project, but if we keep at it, we will get it done. If you would enjoy participating--you are invited.

Check out the exciting display of artwork that students from South Eugene High School will be showing in the Eugene public library for the next two months as part of Martin Luther King celebrations. They have made a neat video too. Here are the flyer and press release for this event.

I'll add "Einstein on Peace" to the list. I wouldn't be surprised to find many of the Einstein quotes from our Study Series in this book.

I'll also look forward to your review of "Jerusalem 1913." When evaluating any of these books, keep in mind that one of our review criteria reflects the idea of not preoccupying oneself with an enemy. Any book we include can include unpleasant facts about a country or group but should reflect Beyond War's attitude of good will overall.

An important book for the bibliography is "Einstein on Peace" , Edited by Otto Nathan and Heinz Norden, published by Simon and Schuster, New Yok 1960. This book is Albert Einstein's own writings on war and peace, and contains some very profound writings from one of the greatest minds of teh 20th century. No peace bibliography is complete without this book. It is out of print, but can be obtained used from Amazon.com and also Biblio.com (a rare and used books on line resource). It would be fabulous is Beyond War could get sponsorship to fund another printing of this book and then send copies to every influential person we can identify.

Anne,
Thank you for your feedback on my suggestion of Jimmy Carter's "Palestine - Peace not Apartheid" book.
I have obtained another book that I am planning to read soon. It is "Jerusalem 1913" (ISBN 978-0-670-03836-7, published by Viking) by Amy Dockser Marcus, a Pulitzer Prize winning author and Wall Street Journal Reporter. This book is important because it provides an account of Palestine before the British Mandate (1920 -1948), a time when many nationalities including Jews and Palestinians lived together peacefully in Jerusalem. This book documents the rise of Zionism and the roots of tension between Jews and Arabs. I am going to read it in hopes that it provides a good understanding of the roots of the issues and challenges we now face in the Middle East. I will read and review it for the Library Project. I choose this as my immediate task to support this project unless you want me to focus my time and energy elsewhere. Please advise.
Your friend in peace,
Dan Welke

Anne,
Sally and I will be glad to read and review books that are nominated for the Core List. We would also be happy to participate in a discussion group. Perhaps we could pick a book, set the timeline for reading, and then hold discussions via teleconference.

I would like to nominate "Palestine - Peace not Apartheid" by Jimmy Carter as a Core List book. It is essential that the Palestinian and Israeli stituation be resovled peacefully to reduce tensions between Muslims and the western nations. This is one of the biggest challenges we face, but also holds the most promise for significant reduction of hostilities and the advancement of peace. The Jimmy Carter book is considered controversial by some, but if you read it, it is clearly factual and unbiased. We should seek to add a few other titles on this subject that offer alternative, but intelligent and honest, viewpoints on the issue. This falls into the Beyond War category of "We are all one". If we are to transend differences and achieve better unity among diverse peoples, we must advance understanding. We cannot ignore the most significant challenge and advance that goal.
