These are the minutes of our first collaborative meeting with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) written by Ann Cole. Eugene is the newest "Chair" for UNESCO and the ONLY ONE IN THE USA!!! There are 20 others throughout the world. Many of the other chairs are coming to Eugene this May to meet with Steve Shankman and we are invited to particiapte/collaborate! Eveyone interested in helping in some way, give us your ideas, energy and time to really make things happen internationally.
Meeting with Steve Shankman and Terri Guerno for UNESCO/ BW collaboration- Jan..16, 2009 1-3pm. Gerlinger Hall Room 103 at the University of Oregon.
Sally, Phil, Melissa, Ann, and Martin met on behalf of BW. Martin presented a brief overview of BW. Melissa introduced the Library project.
Ideas for collaboration:
1. Give a proposal for volunteer needs for International DVD by next Wed.
2. We could co-write a grant or co-sponsor a speaker series. They are planning a regional conference next year 2010 - and want to set up a network. Steve said to think of our ideas in terms of this network.
3.Get in touch with Melissa Crabbe- the Inside out representative for the Library project being taken to the prisons.
4. UNESCO will be offering a certificate for graduate students and give them the opportunity to travel and work in another country for intercultural dialogue and peace. Steve would like BW input on the curriculum. He asked if we could put a few classes together. He is looking for programs to offer. He feels we will have to have some study of war in the program as well. He would like to see the Study Series material and any other curriculum we have developed.
5. He is interested in a program called Scriptural Reasoning which brings together Jews/Muslims/ and Christian to read the texts together. He is interested in finding the commonality between the religions and liked the Golden rule hand out we showed him.
6. He was also interested in the books in the Library project.
7.For the conference this May with the Chairs from around the world - he is willing to set up an audience with BW and some chairs to disseminate the material and set up a prototype for the type of teams they can then begin in their countries. We can share successes and challenges internationally. Also, we could be included in a Rotary luncheon for the Chairs and some other peace groups.
8. Steve was interested in the anti-blame aspect of BW - he feels we need a more Buddhist perspective now. He recommended that we could collaborate with John Orbell who is looking at the evolution of the brain and peace.
9. Steve will have the Chairs go to an Interfaith service in Eugene and is excited by the energy this will generate.
10.He recommended we collaborate with Return Peace Corps.
11.Steve talked about the day of the nation state being over - we need to expand our identification and go beyond national identy. Transcend politics. Transcend ego. Identity- oriented parallels war-orientation. He also teaches ethics and literature that respects the other. Prisoners have crossed this line.
12. He recommended we give the BW book as gifts to the chairs.
13. He notes that people are returning to religions these days for an identity - sometimes violently. We need to look for how transcending identity is expressed in the religions. He is asking - How do we deal with the pathology? At that point when we can't have dialogue? Something we are not dealing with in terms of pathology? Pathologies connected with deeply held religious beliefs. Transforming religions.
14. He will put a link to BW on the UNESCO website that they are now creating. He will also put the international version of the BW DVD.
We will create concrete, specific ideas for the next meeting which will be on Feb. 6, 2009 in Gerlinger Hall room 103.
