Beyond War

Greetings and welcome to the fall issue of the Lane County Beyond War Newsletter!

It’s been an exciting year for Lane County Beyond War. We actually had informational tables at ten area events this year! These took place in parks, city streets, high schools, LCC and UofO. We even managed to cover two events on the same day in August when we joined the Multicultural Festival and the Hiroshima Day commemoration on the same evening!

Our big news for this newsletter is that the Lane County Beyond War members have opened a Eugene office at 30 E. Broadway, #151 (located behind Adam’s Place). Our telephone number is (541) 517-3601, and our email address is bweugene@beyondwar.org. Currently, we are open Monday and Friday mornings plus Wednesday all day. We would increase the hours open if you have time to come in for a few hours on a regular basis. Stop in and see what’s happening.

Local Team Activites

Eugene City of Peace event November 14. You and your friends are cordially invited to join us in celebrating and enhancing what people are already doing to support a culture of peace in Eugene in a gathering called “Each One of Us Matters” Saturday, November 14, 1-5 pm, First United Methodist Church, 1376 Olive St.

What would happen if all of the 65 or so peace, justice, and environmental groups in Eugene came together under one tribal banner, so to speak. This city is overflowing with energy and enthusiasm for peace, justice, and community-building. We have the resources, we have the abilities among us, to do this—and Beyond War is part of this movement. For more information, see the website: https://sites.google.com/site/eugenecityofpeacepublic/Home/about-us.

A new Study Series taking place in the evening will begin in January. Contact the office if you are interested in joining it.

Another new Study Series will begin on Friday, February 5, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Campbell Community Center. It will be listed in the winter issue of the City of Eugene Recreation Services Guide.

Speaking of the Study Series, Dave Hagen scanned in the entire series so that it is now available on our website. You can print it out, download it onto your computer or a CD, or just read it online. Also, the Audio Project team recorded the entire series. The editor was Tim Goss, and the readers were Annetta Forrer, Carolyn Goss, Tim Goss, Gary Griffin, Eileen Hanna, Martin Jones, Sally Marie, Anne Millhollen, Winslow Myers, and Lesley Sabini. As soon as the website is reorganized, the recordings will be available and you will be able to listen to Study Series articles in MP3 format.

We are stuffing letters for the Beyond War fall fundraising mailing now during the hours we are open in the office. Bring your energy and a pen, good conversation is guaranteed! See you there!

We have started a Book Club and Film Discussion groups. Dorothy Sampson is hosting the Book Club gatherings on the first Monday of every month at 7 pm. Anne Millhollen is hosting the Film Discussion group on the second Tuesday of every month, also at 7 pm. Sally Marie is partnering with Steve Shankman, Director of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and Peace, to show and discuss films quarterly at UofO. If you are interested in any of these, email or call us at the office.

The library project keeps growing. Dave Hagen created and continues to update our brochure and bookmarks. He also created display book and film covers on foam core for the displays in libraries. You can see these on the library project webpage: http://beyondwar.ning.com/group/librarydisplayproject. The display was exhibited at eight libraries around the country this year. If you would like to schedule the display at your library, contact us at the office.

Many opportunities exist to assist with this long-term project. We need readers to evaluate new nonfiction books and documentaries as they appear, plus we are now beginning to look for fiction books and feature films that reflect Beyond War principles. If you would like to help, contact Anne Millhollen at the office. Also, check out the amazing array of book reviews that members and PSU students posted in the Forum on our website this year: http://beyondwar.ning.com/forum/categories/book-reviews/listForCate....

David Galiel, Beyond War consultant and strategist, plus Beyond War Board members and staff were in Eugene Wednesday, October 28 to discuss the strategic plan they have been working on. David has been studying Beyond War in depth for the last 2 months and has produced an overall Strategic Outline that he is now refining.

David is very insightful and interested in Beyond War's success. He understands the unique niche we occupy in the overall peace movement. He is very knowledgeable in "new media" -- and ways to use it to spread our message widely and grow the organization. I particularly like that he is "action oriented" and wants to help us "change adjectives to verbs"--to ensure that Beyond war is engaging, relevant, current and dynamic.

If you have any information that would be useful for this newsletter or if you would like assistance with any projects please email us at our office email bweugene@beyondwar.org so that we can include the information in our next newsletter. If any of these activities spark your interest please contact us. A helping hand is always graciously welcomed! Working together, we can build a world beyond war.

You are receiving this email because you have shown support for Beyond War in the past. If you do not want to receive this newsletter please contact us to have your name removed from our email list.
