Beyond War

The Universe Story: From the Primordial Flaring Forth to the Ecozoic Era. A Celebration of the Unfolding of the Cosmos.

Authors: Brian Swimme & Thomas Berry

“The Universe Story” follows the story of the universe from the original flaring forth, through the formation of the galaxies, the extremes of the supernova, the creation of the Earth and all livings things within our ecosystem, and on into the culture of modern civilizations. Through this the authors show how everything is interconnected. this book "is not the story of a mechanistic, essentially meaningless universe, but the story of a universe that has from the beginning has [sic] its mysterious self-organizing power that, if experienced in any serious manner, must evoke an even greater sense of awe than that evoked in earlier times at the experience of the dawn breaking over the horizon, the lightning storms crashing over the hills, or the night sounds of the tropical rainforests, for it is out of this story that all of these phenomena have emerged" (p. 238)
The book presents itself in a logical order to bring the non-science minded person into the story, and relates everyday things to the formation of the universe. I believe that there is probably part of society that will not get the book. The reason is that they will probably not pick it up to begin with. One does not have to be a science minded person to understand the book, but it helps if you have an interest in the current theories of the universe.
Personally I really enjoyed the read. It was written well with a solid introduction, supporting chapters and wonderful conclusion. I am a analytical person with an interest in the physical sciences I found it riveting. I believe that it would sit well in a general audience library and would probably get some people interested that may not initially think about a beyond war lifestyle.
I believe that this book does advance the beyond war ideals when taken in the whole. I do believe that it fits into all of the principles. We are all one on this planet is mentioned in every chapter. The rest are not quoted but implied by the writing. The quote from the first paragraph best shows how the book puts into text how to infer the principles.
I would definitely recommend this book for the beyond war library project and I think that it would be well received by the majority of the readers. It would bring in some people that would not normally be intrigued by the beyond war principles.
