Beyond War

Glen Foster

The Living Universe: Where are we? Who are we? Where are we going?

Author: Duane Elgin
Foreword by Deepak Chopra

In The Living Universe, Elgin articulates the concept that the universe is a living being. He documents current scientific knowledge alongside core beliefs from the world's spiritual traditions to illustrate that wisdom from these disparate arenas points to a shared impression that the universe is alive. Elgin makes sensible connections between science and religion, matter and aliveness. Although the book is very well written I do believe a certain segment of society will not be interested in the book. For those that do not like to immerse themselves in anything that deals with religion and brings out the similarities, they may not like it. Also, for those that are very attached to a certain faith, they may not like how Elgin dissects religions and shows how all are intrinsically the same and how they are connected to the universe is a physical sense.
I believe this book would be good for the public library audience and the general reader would find it attainable. The language is not over the top scientific or religious. He blends the general phrases from both worlds into a cohesive blend of quotes and ideas. This book definitely screams we are all one on this planet and infers all of the other points of beyond war. There are plenty of times Elgin speaks about the obsoleteness of nuclear war and proliferation.
I would recommend this book for the beyond war library project with the exclaimer that it deals with many religions and faiths. Although not overtly religious some may find it offensive.
