Beyond War

The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness
- Erich Fromm

The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness, written by Erich Fromm; was a book that went into a highly detailed amount describing every single aspect of the human mind, also including why human beings do the things or actions that they do.

The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness was a very well explained book, just like any other anatomy book dealing the with human body. This book was able to pick your mind on every aspect of the human mind and how it deals or leads to humans living a destructive life.

This book was very well written, but quite hard at times to follow. I kept weighing back and forth on whether it’s a book that describes to people on how to live a life beyond war. It is also a very good book for those that are interested in learning more about the destructive minds of others; which this can lead your life to thinking of ways to avoid living a life of being destructive.

The Anatomy of Human Destructiveness, instead of dealing with the beyond war principles, it more or less deals with the issues of humans life. ‘Elimination of was is not so uncommon as one would think from the writings of political theorists of the pre history of war… it is a complete misunderstanding to lay the havoc (war) to any biological need of man to go to war. The havoc is man made.’ (page 151, Anatomy of Human Destructiveness).

I personally don’t see or feel that this book deals with any of the beyond war principles. It more or less, thou does a really good job describing man. Giving the exact anatomy of man’s evil ways. It is a really good book for those that are interested in really know why man is the way that he is.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
1- Do you think, from reading this book that man’s behavior is exclusively influenced by his environment? (Meaning by this social, cultural, or innate factors in this life.)
2- Does the character of a person determine his behavior? How they act towards and with society?
3- Do you think how a parent raises their children will determine how they will act and react to the world in front of them?
4- Describe what you think about this: One of the many points the author had dealt with, was that there is really no essential difference between the lack of value judgment in the technical problem of designing a bomb and a decision to build one. The only difference is the motives for building this bomb are not clear.
5- Do you think that man can be a predatory animal?
6- Is there a fundamental difference between behaviorism and ones own psychoanalytic character logy. Meaning those that work thru the self interest, or the desire for food, security, praise, avoidance of pain? Does man always behave in accordance with his self interest?
7- Does man always behave in a way towards his own self interest to get what he wants?
