Beyond War

Martin Luther King, JR: A Life by Marshall Frady depicts the life of the spiritual, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. In his years as a young child, it says that people knew he was different from the rest of his peers. He grew up with a very religious family and that was the basis for what he believed and preached. Growing tired of the constant oppression that African American individuals experienced each day, his goal was to teach people that we are all the same and deserve the same rights. It tells how the beginning of his of journey of securing civil rights for African Americans that he was unsure if he had the capability to take on this very heavy duty. He was aware of how daunting of a task this would truly be and questioned himself. It says that he had a spiritual experience and knew he must go on because it is what God would want. His belief was God loved us all for who we were, so it is our duty to love everyone. MLK was inspired by Gandhi’s nonviolent practices and believed that was the most realistic way for oppressed people to win. The book depicts every major milestone in MLK’s life showing MLK’s heroism in a turbulent time. In the book it talks about how it all really began with the Montgomery Movement which lasted for a little over a year and even resulted in his home being bombed. This movement was the beginning of the influence MLK would have among America. The book recaptures all MLK Jr’s actions to secure an evolution on civil rights in America. It gives the reader an in-depth look into what he was thinking, he biggest burdens, how when he got “bigger” more people got involved in the movements and some he did not trust. It recaptures Bloody Sunday, the day when he was shot to death and the killing story from witnesses from that moment. In any way this book shows MLK’s emotion that come with the huge task of being an icon in the civil rights movement and American history as well.

This would be a great book for Beyond War because Martin Luther King, Jr demonstrated the organizations three main principles. MLK was a huge opponent of using violence to solve any conflict. It states in the book that even when he was a child whenever there was some sort of conflict he could talk people down from fighting and solve the problem peacefully. Throughout his life preached the importance that the mind is more powerful than the fist. Martin Luther King Jr was a leader who was civil rights activist, so he believed that people all deserve the same respect, that we are all one on this planet. The next principle the means are the ends in the making, can definitely be found in this book. This book shows that he continued to be active in changing people’s views and perspectives how people should be treated. In the book discussed how MLK used to talk about how the “white man” was not the enemy even if they were violent against African Americans because they people just like you and I. He did not occupy himself with the hate that was filled by others and his enemies. He knew that the actions that he made then would meet the goals he hoped to fulfill.

1) Do think only one person has the ability or influence to change the way a whole society thinks?
2) Do you believe MLK’s power and influence ultimately made him feel alone?
3) Do you think America would be where it is today if MLK had decided he was not capable of taking on this task?
